Want to replace your home with large transparent windows, or replace old doors and windows? Glass thickness is definitely a key part! It is directly related to the safety and user experience in the later stage!
Today's pure dry goods will help you thoroughly figure out the basis for the selection of glass thickness, friends who want to seal windows, come and take a look!
01
Hard-core basis: national standards are the bottom line!
* Glass area and thickness specified in JGJ 113-2015
The safety standard of glass thickness, that is, the maximum allowable area of safety glass, is clearly required in the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on the issuance of the industry standard "Technical Regulations for the Application of Architectural Glass", numbered JGJ113-2015, which will be implemented on April 1, 2016. The thickness marked in the standard is 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm, corresponding to a single glass area of 2 square meters, 3 square meters, 4 square meters, 5 square meters, and 6 square meters respectively.
According to this correspondence, a simple estimation law can be summarized: the thickness of the glass is equal to the area of the glass*2! For example, a single piece of glass of 2 square meters should be selected with a thickness of 4mm, and a single piece of glass of 5 square meters should be selected with a thickness of 10mm. This thickness refers to the thickness of the largest single piece of glass.
Important! What about multi-layer glazing?
If you choose insulating glass (a combination of two or more pieces of glass), the thickness requirement here refers to the thickness of each single piece of glass that makes up the hollow! For example, if the 5+20A+5 insulating glass is 5mm thick for each single piece of glass, then the maximum allowable area corresponding to each piece of 5mm glass must also meet the above standards (about 3㎡).
02
The key to landing: the door and window separation diagram has the final say!
* Image source network, invasion and deletion
Knowing the national standards, the next step is to implement it on the door and window separation design drawing of your home! This diagram determines the actual size of each piece of glass in your home. The specific steps are as follows:
01 Find the largest single glass
Get the door and window separation diagram and focus on finding the piece of glass with the largest area! Its area determines the baseline thickness of glass required for your doors and windows.
02
Calculate the datum thickness
Maximum glass area (㎡) × 2 = minimum thickness required (mm). For example, if the partition chart shows that the largest piece of glass is 2.5㎡, then 2.5 × 2 = 5mm. This glass should be at least 5mm thick.
03
Round the thickness upwards
The calculated thickness value, if between the standard thicknesses, must not be rounded, and must choose a larger thickness! For example: the largest single piece of glass is 4.5㎡, calculation: 4.5 × 2 = 9mm. But there is no 9mm in the standard thickness, only 8mm and 10mm. At this time, you have to round up and choose a glass 10mm thick! Choosing 8mm is not meeting safety standards!
03
Tips: Large glass plus a middle stick, safe and affordable
Generally speaking, the larger the glass area, the thicker it will be, and the thicker the glass, which also means that the price will be more expensive. A single piece of glass that is too large, even if the thickness is up to standard, may produce a noticeable shaking feeling in strong winds or changes in air pressure, giving people psychological insecurity. In extreme cases, the risk of self-detonation or external impact is also relatively higher.
At this time, you can use the "middle stick" to divide
Want to broaden your horizons while balancing safety and budget? It is highly recommended to use a horizontal stick or vertical stick (middle stick) for glass splitting! Reduce the area and thickness of a single piece of glass, which can not only reduce the cost of lifting and glass thickening, but also make daily use more secure.
Don't let glass thickness become a safety shortcoming in your home! Master the above knowledge and have a good mind when buying doors and windows, in order to create a beautiful and transparent, safe and reliable home environment.
