2025 Curtain Wall Design Competition [Project Exhibition] Frost - Renovation of Weihai Old Port Area

Project Introduction

The Weihai Old Port Area Urban Renewal Project (to Harbor Bay) is the core anchor point for Weihai to build a "refined city", aiming to weave the breakpoints of waterfront public space and connect the city's history and future. The project is backed by Huancui Building and looking east at Liugong Island, and the building integrates into the spatial pattern of "mountain-sea-city-island" with a humble landscape strategy, and the form is taken from the moment when the back of the giant whale emerges from the water, responding to the local whale bone legend.

The project innovatively adopts an 81-meter span steel arch structure to create a magnificent column-free interior space. Functionally, it combines urban living rooms, mini aquariums, public libraries, landscape restaurants and commercial stores, etc., to truly return the core area to the public. The design restores the historical "big playground" and becomes a new carrier for urban celebrations and sports activities.

Since its completion, the project has won many international awards such as the IAA International Architecture Award and the AMP American Architect Award, with an average daily passenger flow of more than 10,000 yuan, which has been widely praised and recognized by all walks of life, successfully activating the vitality of the waterfront and becoming the "Weihai experience" of urban renewal in the country.

Self-evaluation of curtain wall design project characteristics, application characteristics and economy

The curtain wall design of this project carries the historical intention of the roaming ramp and the back of the whale arch, and the design abandons the two-way cable curtain wall with better permeability but insufficient wind resistance, and innovatively adopts a long-span exquisite steel support glass curtain wall system, which ensures the absolute safety of the structure while achieving a wide viewing view.

The façade design emphasizes the flow curve of landscape architecture, and a large number of hyperboloid UHPC (ultra-high-performance concrete) are applied through parametric design to accurately outline the architectural image of "giant whale arch back". UHPC material combines high strength, light weight and excellent durability, and its warm texture echoes the northern coastal environment, significantly reducing later maintenance costs and outstanding economy. The 40-meter-high "Whale Eye" curtain wall on the east side adopts a delicate steel support system and incorporates the beautiful scenery of Liugong Island into the building with the traditional Chinese garden "frame view" technique, becoming the visual focus.
