As we all know, the 599-meter-high Shenzhen Ping An Center is currently the tallest building in Shenzhen, not only with a super high building height, but also with a super high curtain wall appearance!
The project is located in Plot 1 of Futian Central District, at the southwest corner of the intersection of Yitian Road and Fuhua Road, adjacent to the shopping park, opposite the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, and is a high-end urban building complex that focuses on office and integrates sightseeing, shopping and other functions.
As the most representative application case of "stainless steel curtain wall" in China, the project has 118 floors above ground and a sightseeing hall on 116 floors; The construction area is about 460,000 square meters, covering an area of about 19,000 square meters. The outer cylinder is composed of 8 steel-concrete columns and 7 giant diagonal braces frames, known as 8 "fixed building needles" and 7 "golden belts".
On September 24, 2025, the super typhoon "Birch Gaza" approached the coast of Guangdong with strong winds of level 17 or above, and made landfall in the area from Shenzhen to Xuwen.
As the tallest building in South China and the world's super curtain wall project - 599-meter Shenzhen Ping An Financial Center, can it withstand this test of "wind king"? Its safety has caused many citizens to worry.
However, the operation team of Shenzhen Ping An Financial Center has already entered a state of high alert with its experience in resisting hundreds of typhoons.
"Birch Gaza" is the strongest typhoon in the Northwest Pacific Ocean in 2025, with an intensity of more than 17 (62 m/s), and the meteorological department expects that its landfall intensity may be comparable to that of "Mangkhut" in 2018 and "Rainbow" in 2015.
Can the Ping An Center Building be "safe" to resist the typhoon this time?
Since the beginning of the road of "growth" in November 2009, this building has attracted much attention from the industry, and the China Curtain Wall Network ALwindoor.com has also published many articles.
The original design height of the project was 660 meters, but due to the height limit of the "air traffic control", it was later reduced to 599 meters, and finally missed the "highest in China".
With a total investment of nearly 10 billion yuan, the project was completed in June 2016, and when this modern skyscraper towered, it immediately became the most beautiful scenery on the skyline of the Greater Bay Area.
The podium of Ping An Financial Center is used for retail and conferences, and the main building contains 100 office floors that can accommodate 15,500 employees, and the observation deck on the top floor can receive 9,000 visitors per day.
Shenzhen Ping An Center Building is designed by KPF and general contracted by China Construction First Bureau, and the project has experienced various difficulties during the construction process, including 12 super typhoons without any financial losses. In addition to the difficulties in the main construction, the "face" project of the project should not be underestimated, which is also a difficult engineering problem!
The curtain wall consultant of the project is ALT, and the curtain wall construction is undertaken by Shenyang Yuanda. At the same time, as the first super high-rise building in China to use "stainless steel rice grain decorative panels", the most outstanding "stainless steel panels" in the project are all made of imported raw materials and made by the post-processing of "Dongge"! Jianmei aluminum profiles, CSG architectural glass, Dow sealant, Jianlang hardware, as well as Lianhe strong rubber strips, Tylenol style insulation strips and other TOP brands have helped it
The curtain wall system of the project includes: component curtain wall and unit curtain wall system, mainly including: glass curtain wall, dry-hung stone curtain wall, stainless steel finish curtain wall, aluminum plate curtain wall, aluminum alloy louver, stainless steel decorative louver, glass railing and other curtain wall forms, with a curtain wall area of up to 170,000 square meters.
Among them, the façade adopts a low-emissivity coated integrated glass curtain wall, which can limit heat conduction while maximizing daylight penetration and reducing indoor dependence on artificial lighting. The 1st to 5th floors of the lobby are framed curtain walls, using 19mm ultra-white tempered glass, and the 6th floor and above are unit plate curtain walls, with hollow tempered laminated glass, 8+1.52PVB film + 8+12 (hollow layer) + 12 ultra-white tempered.
The building's wind resistance is built from the very basic foundation!
According to national standards, the foundation of a 600-meter-high building needs to be dug to a depth of 30 meters, but in order to ensure that nothing goes wrong, the foundation of this building is dug 33.4 meters underground, setting a record for the deepest foundation pit in China.
Not only that, the engineers also laid 24 9.5-meter-diameter "fixed building needles" (pile foundations), which passed through the 5-story basement and were deeply embedded in the rock layer underground.
This set of super roots deep into the rock is like the root system of a big tree holding on to the soil, so that the whole building can be "as stable as Mount Tai" in the face of strong winds.
The main structure adopts the lateral force resistance system of "giant frame, core cylinder and outreach arm", and the seismic level is special first. Eight streamlined giant steel columns run from the foundation to an altitude of 580 meters, supporting a 680,000-ton building and reducing wind loads by 35%.
These 8 giant columns support a building weighing 680,000 tons, and each giant column has a compressive bearing capacity of more than 100,000 tons, even if it is a giant column, it can easily carry the full weight of an "Liaoning" aircraft carrier!
Seven giant truss structures such as "golden belts" surround the core tube and 8 giant columns of the building, which greatly enhance the overall rigidity and strength of the building.
In addition, on the 114th floor of Ping An Financial Center, two hybrid dampers weighing a total of 1,000 tons have become key wind resistance devices.
They sense the direction of the building's swing in real time and apply force in reverse, reducing building shaking by 30% and greatly improving the comfort of people in the building.
When Typhoon Mangkhut hit Shenzhen in 2018, these two dampers performed well, keeping the top of the tower swinging no more than 30 centimeters and always within 50% of the design value.
Even if the "Birch Gaza" hits with a wind speed of 60 m/s, the maximum swing of the top of the tower is expected to be about 67 cm, far below the locking threshold of 2.2 meters, and the damper is like a weight on the scale, which can effectively offset the shaking of the building.
However, many people are worried that shaking of tall buildings means danger, but experts explain that the swing of the damper is not absolutely related to wind speed. When the wind speed increases, the swing is automatically locked within a safe range of 2.2 meters, and even if the limit is reached, it does not represent a structural risk.
Ping An Financial Center can handle typhoons with average wind speeds of 60 m/s and gusts of up to 80 m/s. Even if a typhoon of level 18 hits head-on, the high-strength steel used in the main structure of the building can withstand loads that far exceed the wind pressure of the typhoon, fundamentally eliminating the risk of collapse.
Although today's Shenzhen Ping An Center Building is not the tallest in China, the ALwindoor.com of China Curtain Wall Network believes that TA still represents a city, an absolute landmark building, and leads the trend of urban construction and design elements!
Shenzhen is a young city, and the Ping An Center Building is also a young building, which will occupy a benchmark position in terms of construction, design, and material application in the next few years.
Especially the "height"...... It is even more difficult to be surpassed! Because, this is a witness to the rise and fall of an industry!
